Publish a course and its new versions
People only ever take a published version of a course. Publishing freezes the material, pins each document to its published version, and freezes the quiz and the pass mark. When you change the course later, you publish the next version.
Before you start
- You need Make courses, assign them, record completions.
- The course needs at least one piece of material. See Create a course.
Steps
- Open Learning → Courses and select the course.
- Under Publish, type What changed (optional).
- Select Publish this version. The message Published. People see this version from now on. appears, and the course shows Published and Version 1.
- To change a published course, edit its material, quiz or details. The course shows Changed since published.
- When you are ready, go to Publish again. Tick Everyone takes this version again if the change matters enough that every past completion should stop counting.
- Select Publish this version.

Good to know
- Completions never change. Each completion keeps the version it was taken on; a new version never rewrites past records.
- Everyone again. With the box ticked, completions of older versions no longer count, so everyone the course is assigned to has it to do again. The version shows Everyone again in Versions. Without the box, people who completed an older version stay done.
- Pinned documents. When a document has a newer published version in Documents, the course says A newer version exists — publish the course again. People keep seeing the pinned version until you publish.
- During a quiz. If a new version is published while someone is taking the course, they are asked to open it again and take the latest one.
- Versions lists each version with its date, who published it and the note.
- Only a published course can be assigned. Next: Assign a course.
