Set up product variants

Variants let one product, such as a T-shirt, come in several options, such as red / small and blue / large. Each variant has its own barcode, price, cost and stock, while the product stays one line in your list.

Before you start

  • Create the product first: see Add a product.
  • You need the right Edit products.

Steps

  1. Open Inventory → Product list and select the product.
  2. Select the Variants tab at the bottom of the product.
  3. In Axes, type the names of the options, separated by a slash, for example Colour / Size.
  4. In Axis 1 values (comma separated), type the values of the first option, for example Red, Blue.
  5. In Axis 2 values (comma separated), type the values of the second option, for example S, M, L.
  6. Select Generate combinations. Kluvan adds one variant for each combination (six in this example).
  7. To add a single variant instead, fill in Add a variant: the Label, Barcode, Price, Cost, Stock and Full stock, then select Add.
  8. In the list of variants, select Edit on a line to change its barcode, price or cost.
  9. Use Hidden to stop using a variant you no longer sell, or Delete to remove one you added by mistake.

Good to know

  • A product that has variants is not counted or reordered itself: its variants are. Stock-takes, the running-low list and reorder suggestions work on each variant.
  • Each variant needs its own barcode if you scan it. Without one, print a label with a generated code: see Print product labels.
  • When you change prices for many products at once, tick Apply to variants too so the variants follow: see Change prices for many products.
